Our VBS mission for 2017 will be in South Dakota. We will be supporting the Diamond Willow Ministries this year. We will be doing some projects as well as raising funds for this vital ministry on the Crow Creek Reservation.
We have in the past supported a ministry in South Dakota that works with the Native American population on the Crow Creek Sioux Reservation. The reservation itself covers approximately 400 square miles. Fort Thompson is the primary community on the reservation. Life is difficult on the reservation with the unemployment rate fluctuating between 70-80%.
The vision of Diamond Willow Ministries is to bring the freedom and peace offered only in Jesus Christ to the Native American Community, becoming a source of light and an example for other communities to follow, ultimately bringing this freedom and peace to surrounding communities and the world beyond.
The Ministry facility began around 2000 with the construction of the Ikce Oyate Christian Center with volunteers from around the country. They have continued to add more and more buildings and in the past few years have started to develop Christian Camps for the local children and youth during the summer months. They have now added the Mato Family Center which is a multi-purpose building used for gatherings, services, parties, and meetings.
The Diamond Willow Ministries staffs and provides a place for children and families to worship, learn about the Bible and fellowship together, called the Icke Oyate Christian Center, which is located near North Shore Boat Ramp at 22850 North Shore Road, Fort Thompson, SD 57339. On Sundays the people get together every week with a pancake breakfast open to the community with a worship service that follows the morning breakfast. During the week there are numerous activities, classes, youth meetings for the Native American people from the reservation and local communities.
